You know the feeling you get sometimes when listening
to something that you should appreciate when the band basically does
everything right, but you have the feeling that you've already heard
it? That's the feeling I get when listening to Polish deathsters Hate
and their latest opus "Crvsade:Zero" and keep thinking about
Behemoth.
In defence of Hate - Behemoth casts a pretty big shadow
- but I expect a bit more from a band that slays along with the upper
echelons in regards to chops in the instrumental department. "Crvsade:Zero"
opens with a double fault in that it doesn't have one, but two intros.
Now, this is a sure way to get me on the wrong side of any recording
as intros are, in fact, abominations and a waste of time, effort and
skill.
The first proper songs Death Liberator and Leviathan are
far better in their magnificent majestic heaviness, albeit that the
lyrics in the latter is a bit repetitive. Overall, Hate puts emphasis
on heaviness rather than speed and this becomes a bit of a trap since
the record to me becomes too long and, yes, a bit boring to be honest.
Poland is a country that has spoiled us with high quality
death metal, but sadly "Crvsade:Zero" is a disappointment
- especially since I know that Hate are capable of music far better
than this.
